Pres Dr. Muizzu calls for Islamic foundation in Maldives’ democratic system
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has emphasized that the Maldives’ democratic system should be rooted in Islamic principles.
In a message shared on social media to mark International Democracy Day, the President expressed his belief that the nation’s governance should align with Islam, alongside the customs and values of its people.
The democratic system was adopted in the Maldives with the ratification of the current constitution. Over the past 17 years, the three branches of government have been separated and the system of governance has undergone major reforms. While in a democratic system, the most powerful body is the people, the Maldivian people are now fully empowered to elect their President, MPs, and councilors.
