Vaikaradhoo MP’s seat at risk after party changed without consent
Vaikaradhoo MP Hussain ‘Fittey’ Ziyad, from the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has claimed he was registered to another political party without his knowledge. MP Fittey has confirmed the matter to the media.
Fittey was registered as a member of the ruling Peoples’ National Congress (PNC) along with several close associates he worked closely with during the last Parliamentary Election, including his campaign manager.
According to Fittey, he did not receive the customary text message from the Elections Commission (EC) notifying him of his party change.
The situation has raised questions about the legality of his parliamentary seat. Following amendments to the Constitution last year, an elected member will lose their seat if they change political parties.
