Vape ban violators to receive text message notification
Maldives Police Service has stated that those who violate the vape ban under the Tobacco Control Act will be notified of violations via a text message.
The vape ban officially came into effect on December 15. Under the law, those who import vape and vape-related products will be fined MVR 50,000, with an additional penalty of MVR 10,000 for each vaping device imported. The sale of a vaping device carries a MVR 20,000 fine, with an additional MVR 10,000 for each vaping device sold. Additionally, the use of vape carries a MVR 5,000 fine.
The police Monday said while the import, sale, distribution, and use of e-cigarettes and vaping devices are now strictly prohobited, the police will enforce the law and take legal action and issue penalties as required. The text message sent to violators will include a Vaaru Pay payment link for settling fines, police said.
The police urged the public to adhere to the law, and cooperate with authorities in enforcing the law. The banβs goal is to cultivate a healthier, tobacco-free community, they said.
