Maldives’ fish exports drop by 46 percent

The Maldives’ fish exports have declined significantly.

According to the central bank, Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), the Maldives exported 30,241.3 metric tonnes of fish from January to end of August this year. This is a 46.6 percent decline from the 26,437 metric tonnes of fish exported during the same period in 2023.

Monthly fish export figures for 2024 are as follows:

January: 4,475 metric tons
February: 6,051 metric tons
March: 3,787 metric tons
April: 4,746 metric tons
May: 4,404 metric tons
June: 3,495 metric tons
July: 1,113 metric tons
August: 2,168 metric tons

Skipjack tuna remained the top export, with 18,454 metric tonnes exported. However, this is a significant decline compared to the 40,369 tonnes of skipjack tuna exported during the same period last year. The Maldives also exported 6,407 metric tonnes of yellowfin tuna and 3,995 metric tonnes of canned and poached fish.
