Tourist arrivals in Maldives up by nearly 6 percent

The Maldives has recorded a 5.8 percent increase in tourist arrivals thus far this year.

According to the Tourism Ministry, a total of 687,916 tourists arrived in the Maldives this year as of the 8th of this month, compared to the 650,404 tourists that visited the Maldives during the same period last year.

Statistics show that 55,498 tourists visited the Maldives in the first eight days of this month alone- an increase of 19.6 per cent compared to 46,400 tourists that visited during the same period last year.

The figures show that 69.7 per cent of the tourists visiting the Maldives, which accounts for 479,491 tourists, spent their holidays in resorts, while local guesthouses accommodated 24.8 percent (170,662) of arrivals. Meanwhile, 20,148 tourists opted to stay in hotels, 17,149 tourists aboard safari vessels and 466 in other facilities.

There are currently 175 resorts, 842 guesthouses, 156 safari vessels and 15 hotels operating in the Maldives.
