Ruling party seeks Prosecutor General Hussain Shaheem’s removal
The ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) has submitted a motion to Parliament calling for the removal of Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem from his post. The motion was introduced by Hulhudhoo MP Mohamed Shahid, whose letter was heard in the Judiciary Committee today.
According to Shahid, Shameem, who was appointed as Prosecutor General on December 8, 2019, during the previous administration, has not been fulfilling his duties as expected of a prosecutor. The motion said while the Prosecutor General should operate independently and impartially, and free from external influences, Shameem does not conduct himself in a similar manner.
Shahid also cited the case of former tourism minister Ali Waheed, who was accused of sexually assaulting female employees of the ministry. After initially charging Waheed, the Prosecutor General’s Office later withdrew the case without a solid legal justification, Shahid noted.
