President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Justice (Retired) Uz. Abbas Shareef as the Prosecutor General.

The post of Prosecutor General became vacant after the dismissal of PG Hussain Shameem, who had already resigned from the position before the Parliament officially approved his removal on August 22. The 20th Parliament approved Abbas’s appointment as the Prosecutor General in a special extraordinary session held outside the session on Tuesday, with 85 votes.

The letter of appointment was presented to the new Prosecutor General at a ceremony held at the President’s Office on Wednesday morning. The Chief Justice of the Maldives Honorable Ahmed Muthasim Adnan administered the oath of office.

Abbas Shareef previously served as the secretary to the President on Legal Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs at the President’s Office. He was also a member of the Governing Board of the Maldives International Financial Service Authority and served as a member of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), along with various other law-related positions.
