NDMA recommends precautionary measures against adverse weather

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has urged to take precautions due to expected adverse weather conditions across Maldives.

The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) has warned that this week, the weather is expected to be unfavorable across Maldives with heavy rain, thunderstorms, rough seas, and gusty winds, particularly in the northern and central atolls.

In response to the alert, the NDMA has made recommendations to the public to take precautionary steps. Some recommendations include:

– Sandbagging homes to ensure flood waters do not enter homes and business premises
– Avoiding parking vehicles in areas prone to flooding
– Moving valuable goods in shops, restaurants, and storage to dry areas
– Moving food and household appliances such as washing machines and refrigerators to higher levels to avoid contact with flood waters
– Secure any item that may be blown away by strong winds
– Switching off electrical appliances when not in use
– Stocking up on staple foods to avoid shortages

The Male’ City Council is currently working on sandbagging 56 households prone to flooding.
