NDMA receives over 400 calls for assistance due to heavy rain
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has revealed that the authority received over 400 calls seeking assistance due to heavy rains in Male’ City.
On Friday, NDMA said it received requests for sand bags to keep out flood waters, and for other forms of assistance. After conducting rapid assessments, assistance was provided to 35 households and those who needed to be relocated were taken to other locations.
Due to the heavy rains experienced in Male’ which caused extensive flooding across the island, Maldives Police Service and Male’ City Council has been sandbagging areas to keep out flood waters. Meanwhile the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has been pumping flood water to clear the roads.
Male’ recorded 163mm of rain over the past 26 hours, including a record 60mm within an hour between 5:00 to 6:00 pm. The Maldives Meteorological Service has warned that heavy rain is also expected today.
