Maldives’ imports from China surge by 55 percent following FTA

Imports to the Maldives from China have increased by 55 percent in January this year.
According to Maldives Customs Service, the amount of goods imported to the Maldives from China increased to MVR 1 billion following the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between China and Maldives coming into effect. Last year, the import value was at MVR 671 million.
Statistics show that China was the top import source for the Maldives in January. Last year, China was in the fourth position.
As per the FTA between both countries, duty levied on imports from China are scraped.
Before the FTA came into effect, trade between China and Maldives was at USD 700 million. The government expects for this amount tot increase to USD 1 billion with the FTA.
