Maldives’ Green Tax revenue surpasses MVR 1 billion In 2024
The Maldives has received USD 70.4 million (MVR 1 billion) as Green Tax revenue.
According to the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA), the revenue generated as Green Tax in 2024 surpassed the 2023 figures by eight percent. While USD 65.1 million (MVR 999 million) was received as Green Tax in 2023, this amount reached USD 70.4 million last year.
The Green Tax, introduced in October 2016, aims to generate funds for various environmental initiatives in the Maldives, including water and sewerage projects, waste management projects, and beach protection activities. The tax is imposed on tourist resorts, hotels, guesthouses, and liveaboards. The Green Tax charged on tourists per day has doubled from USD 3 to USD 6 in guesthouses and hotels with less than 50 rooms, while the amount increased from USD 6 to USD 12 in tourism establishments with over 50 rooms and in resorts. However, the tax is not applicable to children below two years of age.
