Maldives and WHO collaborate on tobacco control masterplan
The Maldives is formulating a five-year master plan to control tobacco use in the Maldives in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO).
The move was announced by Health Minister Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim, while briefing the media on the government’s plans to control tobacco. He emphasized that the strategy aligns with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s vision for a structured and sustainable approach to tobacco control, as decided by the Cabinet in October this year.
Minister Nazim said the Health Ministry would gather input from relevant agencies and the public to formulate the plan. He added that the state would assist tobacco control efforts initiated by local councils within the government system, aiming to increase community participation. The best-performing councils will be identified, and special government assistance will also be extended to development projects implemented in these areas.
