Maafaru Airport resumes int’l flights

Maafaru International Airport has resumed international flights.

The development of Maafaru Airport was funded by the Abu Dhabi Fund, which invested $60 million in the project, and the airport officially opened in December 2019. After Velana International Airport, Maafaru Airport is the largest private jet airport in the Maldives.

After suspending international fights to extend the airport’s runway by 650m, flights have now resumed in time for the upcoming tourism peak season.

In addition to the runway extension, work is currently underway to expand the airport’s apron. The project has been contracted to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC). The upgrades will include the demolition of 453 sqm of the existing fire road, removal of the top sand layer from 18,660 sqm, preparation of a subbase, construction of a new surface layer, and grading and compaction of 4,047 sqm.

Located in Noonu Atoll, a region known for its thriving luxury tourism, Maafaru International Airport serves several high-end resorts, including Soneva Jani, Velaa Private Island, and Randheli Resort.
