High Court accepts appeal in ex-Immigration Chief’s case

The High Court bench has overturned a decision by its Registrar to dismiss an appeal filed regarding the arrest of former Controller General of Immigration Mohamed Shammaan Waheed.

Shammaan was dismissed from his post on March 20 over allegations of using his positional influence to release a foreigner in Immigration custody, and extorting large sums of money from him. He was arrested the next day following a police raid on his apartment, which recovered a large amount of cash and electronic devices.

After the lower court initially remanded him for 15 days, the High Court declined to accept his appeal. Since then, his remand has been extended until pending outcome of trial. Following a request for review on the Registrar’s decision to not accept the case, the bench has unanimously reversed the decision and accepted the case.
