HDC to resume Hulhumale’ water theme park development
The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has announced plans to resume the development of the Hulhumale’ Water Theme Park.
HDC initially signed a US$25 million contract with Malaysia’s Miree Housing Development Realtor on July 13, 2017, to develop the water theme park and a 6-story city hotel. The property to develop the park and hotel was leased to the company for 35 years at the rate of MVR 2 per square foot. Miree Company later transferred all its assets to Water Front Hotel and Leisure Company.
On August 22, 2022, HDC terminated the contract with the company and sent a notice as the company had not done adequate work on the project in the one year granted to do the work and for failing to continue work on the project. The notice also ordered the property to be handed over to HDC within 30 days from the date of termination of the agreement.
Speaking at the Parliament’s Public Finance Committee this week, HDC’s Managing Director Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed revealed that the design work of the water theme park, including a children’s play area, has been contracted to a Sri Lankan company. Once the ongoing Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) works are complete, the site will undergo reclamation and development., he added.
The theme park will feature various attractions, including water slides, bumper boats, a water house, water rollers, water gyros, and aqua loops as well as a fountain square and a river-like watercourse.
