Fisheries Ministry to establish fish packing facility in Hulhumale
The Fisheries Ministry has announced plans to establish a small-scale fish packing facility in Hulhumale’, targeting small and medium businesses.
Speaking to state media, the Director General of the Fisheries Ministry, Dr. Hussain Sinaan the current opportunities for small businesses to export fish are limited, often requiring assistance from large private sector companies. The ministry aims to establish the fish packing facility specifically for these small businesses and is working to secure funding for the project from the Islamic Development Bank (IDB), he said.
According to Sinaan, the facility’s operations will be decided in consultation with the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO). Even if the facility is developed by MIFCO, the intention is to specialize the facility to unions or small exporters, he said.
The Fisheries Ministry has previously said work was ongoing to shift all MIFCO operations in K. Kanduoiygiri to Hulhumale’.
