Fish exports drop by 45 percent

The Maldives’ fish exports have declined significantly.

According to data from the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), the country exported 32,157.4 metric tonnes of fish during the first nine months of 2024, down from 58,761.4 metric tonnes in 2023.

Monthly statistics for fish exports:

January: 4,475 metric tons
February: 6,051 metric tons
March: 3,787 metric tons
April: 4,746 metric tons
May: 4,404 metric tons
June: 3,495 metric tons
July: 1,113 metric tons
August: 2,168 metric tons
September: 1,916 metric tons

Among the various types of fish exports, skipjack tuna topped the list with 18,987 metric tonnes exported by the end of September. This is a significant decline from the same period last year where 47,253 metric tonnes of skipjack tuna were exported.

The Maldives also exported 6,966 metric tonnes of yellowfin tuna and 4,501 metric tonnes of canned and poached fish.
