First homes to be allocated for youth by year-end

The government will begin allocating land plots or flats from the Greater Male’ area this year to ensure a “first home” for those above the age of 18, as the government aims to provide a comprehensive solution to the housing crisis faced by Male’ residents, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced.
In an interview with the state media, the President on Saturday spoke on the government’s plans to find an comprehensive and lasting solution to housing, which is one of the biggest problems facing most of the country’s citizens. He assured that land and flats would be allocated in the Greater Male’ area from different locations including Giraavarufalhu, Gulhifalhu, under various projects during this term. A total of 4,000 flats will be allocated for the Male’ area alone, he said, noting that this would provide an adequate solution to the long-standing housing problem in the area.
Ensuring a “first home” for 18-year-olds Male’ residents is a key pledge of the President’s manifesto, and part of his presidential pledges. The President assured that the work of securing land or flats in the Male’ area will commence this year.
“The eligible applicants will be handed over the land or flats before the end of this year. The government aims to hand over the document [within the expected timeframe],” he said.
The President said that 57 islands are being earmarked for housing projects under contractor financing or state budget funding.
The President acknowledged that previous governments had conducted past social housing projects in such a way that some individuals were unfairly denied housing in the past. The president said such individuals will be prioritised, unless they have received housing through another government scheme.
The President further said that the government will continue to fulfill the promises made to the people and make the daily lives of the people easier.
