Faafu Atoll Council to send 20 employees on Sri Lanka trip amid govt’s spending cuts
Twenty employees of the Faafu Atoll Council are traveling to Sri Lanka at the expense of the atoll council while the government urges a reduction in state spending.
According to council employees, 20 out of the council’s 35 staff members are traveling to Sri Lanka to gain experience and take a holiday. The council is reportedly spending over MVR 150,000 on the trip. The Faafu Atoll Council, which recently received an award for productivity, has faced criticism for the expenditure, as the Local Government Ministry has also instructed councils to avoid unnecessary spending.
Despite repeated attempts, no council members could be reached for comments regarding the trip.
Parliament members have also raised concerns over some councilors traveling to countries such as the UAE, Thailand and Turkey in the name of gaining experience.
