The Democrats are not aligned with the government, the party’s president Hassan Latheef has clarified. Hassan’s remarks follow heavy criticism over senior party members, including himself, meeting with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu for discussions.
Democrats leaders and President Dr. Muizzu last met on July 24.
Speaking on Raajje TV on Sunday night, Hassan explained that his meeting with President Dr. Muizzu aimed to involve the Democrats in the government’s efforts to amend the Constitution, particularly to enhance the decentralization system, and incorporate the Democrats’ ideas and perspectives in the process.
Hassan added that the meeting with the President was not about the Democrats forming a coalition party with the government. During the meeting with the President, a document on how to amend the Constitution, he clarified.
