Customs officers allegedly involved in MVR 400mln bribery scandal

Authorities are investigating a case of alleged bribery involving customs officers, with claims that MVR 400 million was taken as bribes.

The police Monday said the authority began investigating the case on August 19 last year after reports emerged that customs employees were involved in money laundering, corruption and bribery. However, no further details were provided.

Maldives Customs Service did not comment on the case due to the ongoing investigation.

Sources indicate that the investigation focuses on three senior officers believed to be involved in the case. In total, as many as 20 officers are said to be involved.

Officials from relevant authorities have reportedly been summoned to the Parliament for questioning regarding the matter.

Customs has long faced accusations of curroption. Homeland Security Minister Ali Ihsan has earlier assured that legal action will be taken against uniformed officers who engage in illegal activities.
