Criminal Court to livestream Yameen’s corruption retrial
The Criminal Court has decided to livestream the retrial of former President Abdullah Yameen, who faces bribery and money laundering charges related to the leasing of V. Aarah.
On December 25, 2022, the Criminal Court sentenced Yameen to 11 years in prison after finding him guilty of bribery and money laundering related to the leasing of V. Aarah, as part of the Maldives’ largest corruption scandal, the MMPRC graft. However, the High Court later overturned the verdict and ordered the Criminal Court to hear the case again.
At a Criminal Court hearing held today, Yameen’s lawyer, Hamza Latheef requested that the case be conducted live. Judge Ali Nadheem approved the request and said the next hearing would be conducted live.
The next hearing is scheduled for 9:00 am on September 16.
