Chinese delegation to assess feasibility of constructing 50 council offices

A Chinese delegation is scheduled to visit the Maldives this month to conduct a feasibility study on the construction of 50 island council offices under free aid from the Chinese government.

The Mister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works Adam Shareef Umar said the government is working to strengthen the decentralisation system and provide necessary resources to councils. As part of these efforts, the technical team from China will arrive within the month to conduct the feasibility study on the construction of the council buildings, he said.

The President announced that a nation-wide project to construct council buildings will be launched during February last year. Priority will be given islands which have the most dilapidated council buildings and those that face the biggest space constraints, he had said.

Under the project announced by the President, the Minister said that 50 island council offices are being built with Chinese assistance while 55 councils are being constructed at government expense.
