Maldives sees 64.7 percent surge in fish exports

The Maldives’ fish exports increased by 64.7 percent thus far this year.
According to central bank, Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) data, the Maldives exported 31,300 metric tonnes of fish from January to April this year. This is an increase of 12,300 metric tonnes compared to 19,005 metric tonnes of fish exported during the same period last year.
Fish exports from January to April:
January – 5,710 metric tons
February – 8,511 metric tons
March – 7,376 metric tons
April – 9,700 metric tonnes
Among the various types of fish exports, skipjack tuna topped the list with 24,742 metric tonnes exported. During the same period last year, this value was at 12,186 metric tonnes.
Despite the increase in skipjack tuna exports, the amount of yellowfin tuna, canned and poached fish saw a decline during this period. Exports of yellowfin tuna stood at 3,740 metric tonnes at the end of April, while canned and poached fish stood at 2,555 metric tonnes. During the same period last year, 3,567 metric tonnes of yellowfin tuna and 2,127 metric tonnes of canned and poached fish were exported.
