Imthiyaz elected as The Democrats’ President, Waheed as Vice-President
The Democrats has elected Imthiyaz Fahmy (Inthi) as their new President and Mohamed Waheed (Wadde) as Vice-President.
Both leaders were Members of the Parliament elected on the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) ticket int he 19th Parliament.
The Democrats’ President and Vice-President posts became vacant following the resignations of the party’s former president Hassan Latheef and vice-president Mohamed Shifaz, both of whom rejoined the MDP.
Candidacy for The Democrats’ top two positions were opened until Thursday. Imthiyaz and Mohamed Waheed were elected as the party’s president and vice-president by default as no other candidates had applied for the posts.
As per the party’s charters, during the interim period after Hassan’s resignation, one of the party’s Vice Presidents, former Madaveli MP Hussain Firushan served as the Acting President.
