Umra companies warned of strict action against policy violations

Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has warned strict action against Umra companies that operate against the established policies.

In a social media post, the minister said action would be taken against companies that violate the gazetted rules, and agreements with the ministry, or fails to fulfill the requirements under them. Furthermore, action will be taken against companies that do not comply with Article 19 of the gazetted rules, with penalties sometimes including termination of operational hermits, he added.

As per the minister, there are two ways in which action can be taken against those who violate the rules. In this regard, if the matter pertains to a criminal offence, the Maldives police Service will be tasked with investigating the case as well as seeking prosecution. On the other hand, if it is a civil offense, the matter will be forwarded to the Attorney General’s Office.

The Minister reiterated that the Islamic Ministry would ensure that the rights of Umra pilgrimage participants are protected.

In the past, Umra pilgrimage services were offered by several private companies. However, these services have been marred by allegations of corruption and fraud, including the overcharging of participants.
