Indian team joins Maldives fire investigation

An Indian team has arrived in the Maldives to assist the Maldives government in investigating the fire that burnt down the Housing Ministry last Thursday.

The police confirmed that the team is collaborating with the authority in its investigation. However, no further details were disclosed.

The fire broke out at the Housing Ministry around 6:30 am on December 12, before official working hours commenced. The blaze then spread to the Construction Ministry before reaching the Green Building which houses the Environment Ministry. The three ministries were destroyed in the fire, with all documents and equipment at the ministries beyond recovery.

The police have asked anyone with information on the fire to share it with the authority at the earliest.

Meanwhile, the opposing Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has accused that the damage fire was extensive due to the negligence of the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) and other state agencies. The party has called for an independent investigation to determine the origin of the fire.
