Fire ravages Housing Ministry building

A massive fire has engulfed the Housing Ministry building in Ameenee Magu.

Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF)’s firefighters are actively working to contain the blaze.

MNDF said the fire has not yet been controlled. While the fire has now reached the “Green Building” also under the Housing Ministry, the immediate priority is to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading further. Airport firefighters have also joined the firefighting operation, MNDF confirmed.

Those in surrounding buildings have now been evacuated for safety, and an emergency evacuation center has been established at the Social Center. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has urged people requiring assistance to contact their hotline at 115 or visit the evacuation center for support.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has issued a public health advisory, urging those in the affected area to cover their mouth and nose properly. Smoke from the fire poses more risk to those with heart conditions and respiratory issues, the agency said. Residents in nearby areas are advised to keep the doors and windows tightly shut and to seek immediate medical attention if symptoms such as shortness of breath, breathing difficulties, persistent coughing, and dizziness are experienced.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has visited the area to assess the situation.
