Higher Education Minister to temporarily oversee Agriculture Ministry
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has assigned Minister of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development, Dr. Maryam Mariya, to temporarily oversee the functioning of the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare. The decision was made following the resignation of Dr. Aishath Rameela, due to health concerns.
Dr. Rameela was sworn in as Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare in President Dr. Muizzu’s government on 17 November 2023. The same month, she disclosed in a social media post that she had been diagnosed with late-stage cancer.
Dr. Rameela has previously served as Minister of State for Health and Minister of State for Health and Family. She commenced her service to the Maldivian government in 1990 as a nurse. Over the past 34 years, she has served the Maldivian nation in both government and private enterprise sectors. She completed her PhD in Social Sciences in Malaysia in 2010.
