MWSC to revamp Niandhoo’s aged sewerage system

The Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has been awarded a contract to establish a new sewerage system in Faafu Nilandhoo.

Nilandhoo’s current sewerage system was established about 17 years ago, a vacuum sewerage system installed by a Dutch company, unlike sewerage systems commonly installed in the Maldives. The existing system has deteriorated significantly due to poor maintenance, causing frequent failures, including improper drainage and overflowing sewerage onto roads. Some locals have resorted to manually digging pits to manage water overflow.

The island’s sewerage maintenance work was awarded to Fenaka Corporation in 2019. However, as this system is different from the conventional sewerage system models commonly used in the Maldives, the maintenance was not efficiently conducted, which exacerbated the problems. A junction draining bowser has been brought to the island to provide a temporary solution to the issue.

MWSC’s Managing Director Abdul Matheen Mohamed had previously assured that a modern system would be implemented to address these issues comprehensively. Under the new project, MWSC will establish an upgraded sewerage system, with completion targeted within 540 days.
