Islands designated as urban centers have min. population of 10,000: Minister
Housing Minister Dr. Ali Haidhar has said islands designated as urban centers have a minimum population of 10,000.
On Saturday, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu designated seven islands to become central urban centers across the Maldives. They are R. Ungoofaaru, B. Eydhafushi, Lh. Naifaru, ADh. Mahimadhoo, F. Nilandhoo, Dh. Kudahuvadhoo, and L. Fonadhoo.
In an interview with state media PSM, Minister Haidhar said that as populations in these urban centers grow, services will be expanded to meet increasing demand.
“If more people are populated in these main islands, they will not have to travel for essential services,” Haidhar said.
The minister said islands to be developed as urban centers were designated after considering the current investment made in the islands. In this regard, existing health services and education services available on the island, and the potential for further land expansion, were also factors considered.
The minister said the urban development plans and policies are currently being formulated.
