Rising demand for sea-to-air cargo service

The demand for sea-to-air cargo services in the Maldives is increasing, Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen has said.

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) launched this sea-to-air cargo service in March, with its inaugural shipment sent in May. Currently, goods are being transported to 13 countries, and the number of airlines involved in the service has grown to seven.

In a social media post, Minister Ameen said with the increase in demand for the sea-to-air service, the top priority is to regulate and promote the sector. He emphasized the Maldives’ strategic position for air connections to Europe and the Middle East, and said the advantage has opened up new opportunities for efficient cargo transport.

“While freight opportunities have increased, our primary focus is to regulate and expand this service,” he said.
