MDP to establish political academy
The opposing Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has decided to establish an academy aimed at training individuals interested in becoming active in the political arena.
Speaking at the MDP National Assembly held Wednesday, MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail said the aim of the academy is to develop competent politicians.
Fayyaz said the academy will be registered with the relevant authorities and members of other parties will also be able to study at the academy.
“However, there are challenges in setting up the academy. We have to look into the laws and regulations on a political party establishing such an academy,” he said.
Fayyaz expressed hope that students from foreign countries would also attend the academy in the future.
The National Assembly also decided to start an income-generating business to support the party financially. According to the resolution, the National Assembly will identify the business opportunities for the party to generate income and determine the best business registration model and rules for conducting business. Fayyaz said discussions had already taken place with Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed and other relevant officials regarding the matter.
