STELCO aims to issue bills on same day as meter reading
The State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) is working towards sending electricity bills to households on the same day meter readings are taken.
Speaking to reporters, STELCO’s Managing Director Hussain Fahmy said the issue of sending the bills several days after the reading is taken has persisted for about the last 15 years. Currently, bills are sent within 25 to 30 days from the date of the reading. However, the company is developing a system to send bills immediately on the day of the reading, he said.
STELCO has faced ongoing criticism for extremely high and increasing electricity bills for households each month. Following outrage over last month’s bills, STELCO has now decided to conduct an audit to investigate the surge in bills for households with notably high charges last month, Fahmy said. He added that the cost of services provided by STELCO could be reduced through the use of renewable energy or solar power.
