Ruling PNC wins by-election, secures all city council seats
Candidates from the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) have won all seats in a by-election held Saturday to elect councillors to two city councils.
The Election Commission (EC) organized the elections for three vacant constituencies in the Male City Council, a vacant seat in the Kulhudhuffushi Council, and to elect a President for the F. Biledhdhoo Council.
As per interim results, PNC candidate, Areesh Ismail secured the Bilehdhoo Council presidency, defeating the opposing Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidate Shaail Mahir. The by-election results for Male’ City Council’s Macchangolhi Central, Henveiru West, and Hulhumale constituencies saw victories for three PNC candidates: Fathimath Ishan for Macchangolhi Central, Fathmath Shaufa Salem for Henveiru West, and Ali Aiman for Hulhumale. The Kulhudhuffushi Council seat was won by PNC’s Ibrahim Ahmed, who triumphed over MDP’s Shamnooz Mohamed.
EC reported a low voter turnout for the by-elections.
