New tourism concessions target investment in five atolls

Special confessions under efforts to expand tourism in the five atolls with the fewest resorts will be announced this month, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated. The President made the remark while speaking at a press conference held at the President’s Office on Saturday.

President Muizzu said the five atolls with the least number of resorts are Haa Alifu, Haa Dhaalu, Shaviyani, Thaa and Laamu Atoll. Incentives will be given to attract investors to expand tourism in these atolls, he said. The work of making the necessary changes to laws and regulations is now being completed, he said.

“We will impose a sunset clause for those five atolls alone for a certain period of time as a way to grant concessions,” he said.

The President said the concessions include land acquisition cost concessions as well as duty concessions.

“We are targeting to announce it within this month,” he said.

With these concessions, there is certainty that investors will be available to invest in the five atolls, the President said.
