Inflation rises by 5.3 percent in January

The Maldives saw a 5.33 percent increase in prices last month compared to January last year, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The Consumer Price Index (CPI), a measure of the price of goods and services showed that prices of goods and services rose 0.33 percent in January compared to the previous month.

Excluding changes in fish prices, inflation stood at 0.08 percent.

Biggest price hikes:

Tuna – 5.19 percent
Restaurant cafe service – 3 percent
Fruit – 4.36 percent
Vegetables – 2.33 percent
Milk, other dairy products and eggs – 0.83 percent
Clothing – 0.86 percent

Meanwhile, mobile phone prices fell by 7.72 percent and electricity prices fell by 1.74 percent last month, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. Additionally, motorcycle prices fell by 1.62 percent and furniture by 5.48 percent, according to the CPI report.
